    Echo Cliffs and Jockeybush

Region: Adirondacks Type: Chapter Outings Activity: Hiking Posted by: Albany Chapter Trip rating: B Leader: Robert Priest Contact Phone: 5184897472 Contact Email: RPriest001@nycap.rr.com I am combining two short hikes for a full day's outing. There are many mature maple trees near both trails and I expect to see a lot of bright colors at this time of year. The climb to Echo Cliffs on Panther Mountain is short but steep -- a little less than one mile each way with 700 feet of ascent. There is a stellar view of Piseco Lake from the summit. The hike to Jockeybush Lake is one mile each way with little ascent. If we have time, we could continue along a herd path on the north side of Jockeybush Lake, or hike to the campsites on Good Luck Lake.

We pass by a scenic view of Heart Lake shortly after leaving the trial head. We have a choice of three trails leading to the summit. The sign identifies them as the short trail, the long trail, and the rock garden trail. The short trail is the steepest, but they all have some steep stretches. From the summit we get a top down view of Heart Lake. Many of the high peaks are visible to the south. The total distance is 1.8 miles ( a little longer if we choose the rock garden) with 700 feet of ascent.

Region: Adirondacks Type: Chapter Outings Activity: Hiking Posted by: Black River Chapter Trip rating: N/R Leader: Jesse Contact Email: Jirwin518@gmail.com Link: https://www.adk.org/adk-chapter/black-river-chapter/ AMPERSAND MOUNTAIN WITH JESSE Oct 2, Sat. 9am. Our journey to complete the Saranac 6 continues up the 5.4 mile round trip trail on Ampersand Mountain. From the parkingarea, carefully cross Route 3 to get to the trailhead. The path descends slightly to a brook crossing before starting an easy hike that gentlyrolls up and down through a mature forest. At 0.8 mile there is a long boardwalk across a wet section; soon after that the trail begins a slowascent, then it gets steeper as it approaches the location of the old fire observer’s cabin, on the right at 1.7 miles — rubbleis all that remains of the building. Past the cabin site, the grade increases and eventually becomes very steep as it reaches a stone staircase, which was built to alleviate the heavy erosion caused by water runoff and heavy foot traffic. The trail remains rocky from this point on. Take note that footing can be slippery along this stretch, especially during wet weather. The path reaches a ridge and levels out at 2.4 miles, and soon after that it enters a spectacular section with enormous, jumbled boulders the size of small houses. Take a few minutes to explore thenarrow passageways here, then swing right to climb over open rock to the summit at 2.7 miles. Distance: 2.7 miles to the summit. Elevation: 3,353 feet, Elevation Gain: 1,775 feet, Trail Rating "B". Contact Jesse at 518.366.2223 call or text or Jirwin518@gmail.com
